Wikilala is a digital library that allows users to search in contemporary Turkish within texts (newspapers, magazines, books, and documents) from the Ottoman and Republican periods (1729-2023) published after the invention of the printing press.
Currently, there is no library that allows enthusiasts or academic researchers to perform integrated searches in Early Republican and Ottoman texts using the Latin alphabet. Until the advent of digital printing, researchers had to scan pages of subject headings, or even read line by line, to find what they were looking for, especially within Ottoman texts. However, thanks to Wikilala, they can access all the titles and content they are looking for in a fraction of a second with a single click.
You can access periodicals from the Ottoman and Early Republican periods, such as Ceride-i Havadis, Tasvir-i Efkar, Servet-i Fünun, Ulus, Vatan, and Milliyet, and search all newspapers in contemporary Turkish.
Wikilala, which provides access to over millions of pages of periodicals and thousands of books, aims to gather all newspapers, magazines, books, and manuscripts published between 1729 and 1950, and is constantly enriching its content.
How does the system work?
Before Wikilala, searching for publications before the alphabet revolution (i.e., before 1928) was done as follows. For example, if you have a research topic on "Turkey and America relations during the Ottoman period," you would have to read the headlines or columns of all newspapers published during the Ottoman period, like searching for a needle in a haystack, to access information on the relevant topic or content. However, with Wikilala, you can access all the content and titles you're looking for with a single click in under a second. By typing two keywords related to the topic (for example, Turkey and America) into the search box, you can list the Ottoman newspapers, magazines, or books that contain these two words, and you can access them by marking which issue and page line they appear on. You can also search within the document using Latin or Arabic script.
