The "Turkish Tourism Encyclopedia" was first published in paper form in 2022. While the history of tourism in Turkey dates back to the mid-1800s, tourism as a sector began to develop after the 1950s. The Turkish tourism sector entered a period of true development, particularly with the enactment of Tourism Encouragement Law No. 2634 in 1983. Tourism education and research in Turkey also began in the 1960s. After the 1980s, significant advances in tourism education and research paralleled the development of the tourism sector. While tourism sectoral development in Turkey has reached a level competitive with the world, tourism education and research have also reached a level that is globally recognized.

The Turkish Tourism Encyclopedia is an open-access online publication. The encyclopedia consists of approximately nine thousand articles written by 2,200 authors on topics related to and related to tourism. The number of articles and authors is constantly increasing with new articles.
