The internet library project, designed by the Boğaziçi University Visually Impaired Technology and Education Laboratory (GETEM), aims to provide access to information resources for the visually impaired. This project includes not only the visually impaired (who number around 400,000 in Türkiye), but also individuals with other disabilities (paralyzed or dyslexic) who cannot access printed resources without restriction. The library's publications are primarily in Turkish and English. It includes stories, novels, and poetry, as well as course materials (books, articles, and lecture notes) taught in educational institutions at all levels, recordings of some lectures and conferences, and scientific articles and books. In addition to these, the GETEM catalog includes a wide variety of content, including radio plays, MP3 versions of audio-described films, and audio narrations for computer and smart devices.
To achieve this goal, the works in the internet library are available to users in electronic text, human voice, and computer audio formats. The works at GETEM are produced through the contributions of volunteer readers and through collaboration with other libraries serving the visually impaired. Furthermore, through collaboration with various institutions, users who lack computer and internet access can access some of the works with just a phone call.
